Why Professional Towing Is a Must During The Winter

Blog

If you live in the Northeast, then you may be well accustomed to the cold weather. While this is true, you should understand that it is wise to call in a professional tow service if you are stranded on the side of the road once the snow begins to fall. There are a few reasons for this. Keep reading to learn what they are.

You May Get Hypothermia

Even if you are bundled up and ready to take on the toughest snowstorm, you may end up in a scenario where you experience hypothermia or frostbite if you try to get your car out of a ditch or another sticky situation. It can drop well below zero degrees Fahrenheit on the coldest days, and a hefty windchill can easily make it feel below twenty or so degrees. In this situation, frostbite and hypothermia can start to develop in 30 minutes or less. And, if you are working up a sweat trying to free your car, then the heat dispelling effect of the fluid can make matters even worse.

Not only can a dangerous chill start to take its toll on your body, but you will likely let all of the heat out of your vehicle by simply getting in and out of it to do your work. It is wise to conserve that heat by staying in your car and waiting for your tow service to arrive. Turning your car on for 10 minutes at a time while you wait with the heat on full blast can also help, but this may not be possible if you have a dead battery. In this scenario, make sure to layer on the clothing and keep the layers tight on your body until help arrives.

Accidents Are Common

If you have slipped off the road due to a patchy area of ice, then there is a good chance that others cars might do the same. And, if you are outside your vehicle for too long, then there is a good chance that you may be struck by the slipping car. This is also true when it comes to plows as well as individuals who are having difficulties with visibility at night.

Since accidents are common, it is wise to forego the cones, triangles, and flares during a winter storm. Simply put on your hazards and stay put in your vehicle until the tow truck arrives. And, to help make sure that you can be found as quickly as possible, try to find your exact location on any and all GPS devices you have available to you in your car.
